Abi/Yakurr rerun: APC’s Alex Egbona reclaims victory at the poll

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC for the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in Cross River State election rerun, Hon. Alex Egbona, has reclaimed his mandate at the poll after scoring massive votes.

Hon. Egbona, who is the seating House of Representatives Member for Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency reclaimed his victory after scoring the majority of the votes ahead of his close rival, Rt. Hon. John Gaul Lebo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other candidates.

The Lawmaker’s mandate was in contention after the Appeal Court sitting in Calabar last year ordered for an election rerun for two wards; Ekureku 1 and 2 in Abi local government area due to irregularities in the February 23, 2019 National Assembly election, but Egbona polled a total of 29,716 votes to emerged winner ahead of John Gaul, who scored a total of 26,039 votes after the Saturday, January 25, 2020 rerun.

In the keenly contested election rerun, Alex scored 11,352 votes to defeat Rt. Hon Gaul who scored just 311 votes.

A break down of the votes polled by both candidates in the rerun election from both Ekureku 1 and 2 wards, saw Alex securing 6,689 votes from ward 1 and 4,662 votes from ward 2 while Gaul polled 110 votes from ward 1 and 65 votes in ward 2.

In summary, adding previous votes secured during the February 23rd National Assembly election for Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency; Alex Egbona of the APC scored a total of 29,716 votes, while John Gaul of the PDP scored 26,039 votes.

According to the election result sheet for the rerun signed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Cross River State, Dr. Alalibo Sinikiem Johnson, Alex Egbona of the APC was declared winner by the Returning Officer for Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency rerun of election of Saturday, January 25, 2020
