BIRTH

Unarguably, it is phenomenal to often find the birth of most great men in history to be characterised by lowliness. The case of this compressed giant before us is obviously not an exception. Hon Dr Alex Egbona is a man not born great in the year 1964 in Agbara in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State. Yet he is a man who has risen from a very humble backdrop to the top echelon through personal struggles, hardwork, service, diligence, discipline and dogged determination.

EDUCATION

Like every other normal child, Hon Alex Egbona began his formal education at the time children of age commence theirs. He attended Government Primary School and Agbo Comprehensive Secondary School, both in Egboronyi, Abi Local    Government Area. Consequently, he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate(FSLC) and the West African Certificate(WASC). Additionally, he attended the Federal School of Arts and Science, Ogoja and obtained his A/level upon completion. Being an academically ambitious young man and poised to prove his intellectual prowess, these preceding educational qualifications were inadequate or insufficient for Alex. Consequently, he proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt in 1986, for an undergraduate programme in Economics and on completion of studies in 1990, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. In compliance to the Federal Government policy, Ntufam Alex did his compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps in Kaduna State Polytechnic, Zaria. After a couple of years, he acquired a Master of Public Administration degree in 1997 from the University of Calabar, in addition to the B,Sc. Degree.

One would have thought that Ntufam Alex would bid goodbye to further studies during the period of his active involvement in politics and in the governance of the state, especially considering his ever-busy schedules and tasking responsibilities as a political appointee. Yet his resolve to prove his mettle in the world of scholarship rather nullified that consideration and thinking. Therefore, on the contrary, Hon Alex was reactivated and energized to press harder and he undertook further studies and had a second Master’s degree in Educational Planning while in service. He also holds the highest academic qualification of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Administration and planning from the prestigious University of Calabar with special interest on policy formulation and implementation.

CAREER/APPOINTMENTS

Although Hon Egbona has found his niche in the private sector, a greater part of his career life revolves around politics. The unfolding of his inclination to politics was manifestly displayed right in his undergraduate days in the University. Evidently, Hon Alex Egbona’s active public life kicked off from the lowest rung of the political ladder when he ran for and won Councillorship Election in 1992 to represent his Council Ward under the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC). He also contested and won election to the Cross River State House of Assembly 1998 under the defunct UNCP. His active participation in partisan politics, his uncommon loyalty to leadership, his humility and his strength of character, have all coalesced to earn him a few political appointments which have unarguably brought him in the political limelight. Among them are the following:

  • Special Assistant to His Excellency, Mr. Donald duke, Executive Governor, Cross River State: 2002 – 2003
  •  Deputy Chief of Staff to His Excellency, Mr. Donald Duke, 2003 – 2007
  • Chief of Staff to His Excellency, Senator Liyel Imoke, Executive Governor, Cross River State: 2007 – 2014
  • Hon Alex Egbona is presently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Gbogolo Integrated farms limited.

AWARDS & HONOURS

Besides his political appointments from successive administration, Hon Alex has also earned a number of Awards and Honours from different organizations and institutions, arising from his magnanimity and philanthropist gesture, his good-naturedness and selfless contributions to the development of humankind and society at large. The Awards include:

  1. Award of Honour for Distinctive Doyen by Goldcity Gospel Ministry International, Calabar,2010
  2. Goldservice Award by Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa, Abuja – 2011
  3.  Award of Merit by NACRISS Worldwide – 2013
  4. Award of Honour by the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Mkpani Parish – 2014

SOCIAL LIFE

Aside from his active involvement in political activities, Hon Alex is a social engineer who mixes freely with both young and old. He is a highly detribalized man and friend of the downtrodden, and his extension of love and acts of kindness knows no bounds. He donated buses to the physically challenged, and has also paid school fees and offered scholarships to indigent students, both in Abi and Yakurr Local Government Areas. He is a member of several professional bodies and associations. He is married to Mrs. Veronica Alex Egbona and the marriage is blessed with children.

CHIEFTAINCY TITLES

Interestingly, the recognition of Hon Egbona worthy contribution to society is not limited to religious and educational organizations, various communities have also appreciated his philanthropist gesture and his immense contribution to society by conferring traditional titles on him. First among the numerous title is the Chieftaincy title of Eval Nkami I of Agbara Land by Agbara Community Association, Lagos Branch in 2009, and Eval Nkami by Ngarabe Clan in 2013, all in Abi Local Government Area, which obviously invalidates the postulation that a prophet has no honour in his own place. Others are:

  • Ntufam Ntak Otae of Qua Clan by the Quas of Calabar Municipality.
  •  Ntufam Nejanghane by the Etung Traditional Rulers Council Etc.

Your majesty, the Obol Lopon of Ugep, His Royal Majesty, Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, members of the revered Umor Otutu Palace, ladies and gentle men, I have the privilege and honour at this point to present to you this compressed giant, a business mogul, an academic guru, a social engineer, a philanthropist, an astute administrator, a politician extraordinary, Hon Dr. Alex Egbona for the conferment of the Chieftaincy title of Obol Nkama of Ugep.
